MY BIO

When I was about 5 years old and a fan of Dr. Seuss, I decided that I was going to be a writer someday. This must have been a pretty good idea, because that’s exactly what I became.

Over the years I had a few additional ideas for my professional future (dog trainer, horse breeder, artist, actress, MTV video director, shrink), but writing has always been my first love. And you never get over your first love.

I grew up in Milwaukee – a place that will always be home to me – and attended the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where I earned a degree in mass communications and psychology. I received an award of special merit from the journalism department for my radio documentary on sexual assault.

After a year at the Marinette Eagle-Star, I joined the staff of the Beloit Daily News, where I covered education, business, crime and miscellany. The seven years I spent at the BDN provided a lifetime of education for me as a writer and as a citizen. Two tall feathers in my cap: breaking the story that the Ku Klux Klan had a presence in Rock County, and winning a Wisconsin Better Newspapers award for a humor column about women and cars.

After a stint editing three community papers in the Janesville area, I relocated to Madison. I started selling advertising for Now Hiring magazine, but when I could not cover rent, I realized that I stunk at sales. So I became the editor of the publication.

Later I did some PR and marketing work for a few organizations and then joined the staff of Capital Newspapers, where I’m specialty publications editor. I consider myself extremely fortunate to wake up every morning and go to a job that I enjoy. I hope my inner 5-year-old is proud.

When I’m not at my day job, I stay busy on my freelance writing and editing business, words & stuff. My clients have included ANEW Magazine (now Brava), Baird Health Consulting, Beloit Inner City Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Clinic at a Time Inc., Corridor Technologies,  CUNA & Affiliates, Dane County Kids, Madison Magazine, Magna Publications Distance Learning, Mature Lifestyles, Mercy Health Systems, Rhythm, SCREEN Magazine, The Capital Times,  The Madison Times, The Phoenix, The Wisconsin Automobile and Truck Dealers Association, Trails Media, Wisconsin Academy Review, Wisconsin State Journal, and Profession Direction. I’ve also written and edited several books.

Some examples of what I can do for you are here. If you’re looking for someone to provide excellent writing, editing, photographic or marketing services, at a price that won’t make your head blow up, let’s talk.
